Sometimes you know that something needs to change, but you are not quite sure where to begin. You may find yourself repeating the same patterns in relationships, struggling with anxiety or overwhelm, being very hard on yourself, or simply feeling that the way you have always coped is no longer working.
Individual counselling can give you a space to slow things down, understand yourself better and begin to make sense of what is happening beneath the surface.
Looking beyond the problem
My approach is not just about managing symptoms. I am interested in helping you understand why you feel, react and relate in the ways that you do.
Together we might notice patterns that developed much earlier in life, the ways you have learned to protect yourself, or beliefs about yourself and relationships that no longer serve you.
Understanding where these patterns come from does not mean staying stuck in the past. It gives us somewhere to start making different choices in the present.
What we might explore
People come to individual counselling for many different reasons. My work particularly includes:
- Relationship patterns – understanding why the same difficulties can keep appearing in relationships and what might help you respond differently.
- Anxiety and overwhelm – exploring what sits beneath anxiety, what triggers it and how you respond when things feel too much.
- Childhood emotional neglect – making sense of the impact of growing up without enough emotional support, understanding or connection.
- Grief and bereavement – having somewhere to explore loss at your own pace, whether your bereavement is recent or happened many years ago.
- Self-esteem and self-criticism – understanding the harsh internal voice that can leave you feeling never quite good enough.
- Boundaries and people pleasing – recognising your own needs, understanding why saying no can feel so uncomfortable and learning to tolerate putting yourself into the equation too.
How I work
I offer a warm, thoughtful and non-judgemental space where we can be curious about what is happening rather than deciding there is something wrong with you.
We will work collaboratively, looking at what you want to be different and what may be getting in the way. At times I may offer exercises or things to think about between sessions, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
